“You shall have no other gods before Me.” – Exodus 20:3
The source of societal order is God. God’s first commandment, written by His fingers on the stone tablet that He gave to Moses, underscores the foundation of not merely orderly human society, but also personal individual mental and physical health.
The point here is that only one God exists, and that God is the God of the Bible – the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Any other purported God out there does not actually exist… including the alleged ‘gods’ of the following religions: Islam, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons), The Jehovah’s Witnesses, et al. All of these gods, though in name ‘God’, are in actuality and as seen in their writings, not the God of the Bible. These gods are false gods, and those who are worshipping them are worshipping things that do not actually exist.
If one worships another ‘God’, then one is doing so – ordering the most fundamental and important part of his or her life… one’s thoughts about why one exists, what the purpose of being alive is, etc. – according to that which does not correspond with reality. If the most basic part of why you are doing what you are doing is ‘unreal’, then the rest of your life will correspond to a measure of unreality, and that directing the rest of the course of your life.
Additionally, if you understand that God is the motivator of what you do in your life (or should be…), then the next step in seeking to have a family and a marriage – a life – that honors God is that you need to be motivated by Him.
So, do you want to live a life that please Him? Then, check the things that you are motivated by… what is that you ‘want’ or ‘need’ that you would not be happy without having? If the answer to this ‘fill-in-the-blank’ question: “Unless I have ______________, I will not be happy.” is anything other than God, then you are worshiping an idol… a false god. You are building your life on and are motivated by fantasy and delusion. The biggest problem of living a life based on fantasy is that when you meet up with reality, your fantasy doesn’t hold up well… it in fact gets destroyed.
The solution is to repent. Repentance means to turn the other way. I have written about repentance here.
If you want to have a happy life, a happy marriage and a happy family, it all begins with who or what you are worshipping… and if you are worshipping anyone or anything else other than the God of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, then you are worshipping a false god.
It’s easy enough to see if you are worshipping a god of a false religion like those mentioned above… but what are some other gods that people worship? Let me know what you think below…
