10 Easy Ways to Stay Healthy at the Beach This Summer

We all love a good vacation, and an even better vacation is when we don’t return home injured. When we take the time to consider our choices and make wise decisions we will be blessed in the end. Therefore, if you would like to have a good beach trip whenever you go, than you will find this article informative and easy to read.

Note: These are ten guidelines that you “should” practice.

1. Stay Hydrated & Don’t Eat or Drink Unhealthy Foods or Beverages

Drinking water at the beach usually isn’t difficult—it’s often refreshing and readily available. However, spending time in the sun and near saltwater can actually increase dehydration, so it’s important to drink plenty of water. If you love the beach (like me) than you will spend time in the ocean. If you spend time in the ocean you have a high probability of getting the ocean water in your mouth. Therefore, drink some nice fresh water.

Eating healthy is just as important. Though, you can still enjoy eating your favorite seafood. Just please make sure it’s healthy.

Steer clear of overly salty or sugary snacks and drinks, which can dehydrate you and make you feel sluggish.

Instead, try some watermelon, which is rich in lycopene, an antioxidant linked to natural sun protection. Other foods you may enjoy eating that are really healthy include: fish, fresh berries, mixed nuts (unsalted), Greek yogurt, carrot and celery sticks, whole grain wraps with lean turkey or veggies, homemade fruit popsicles, avocados or guacamole, and iced green tea.

2. Practice Safe Swimming

Always swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards; unless, no lifeguards are on duty. Additionally, make sure a family member or friend knows where you are and can see you, or swim close enough to others while still respecting their personal space. Be aware of ocean currents, tides, and posted safety warnings to stay safe in the water.

3. Be Mindful of Surroundings

Since awareness of ocean currents, tides, and warning signs was just covered, you should also stay mindful of marine wildlife, sharp objects like broken glass or shells on the sand, and individuals who may be behaving foolishly. Staying alert can help prevent accidents and ensure a safer beach experience. Additionally, stay mindful of how your body feels and avoid overexposure to the sun to prevent getting sunburned. If need be report anything that could be dangerous to protect your safety and those around you.

4. Avoid Overexertion

Overexertion can lead to more serious issues if not addressed early. After being active, take a break, relax, and enjoy some sun to allow your body to recover. Or, you may want to enjoy the shade and build a sand castle.

5. Use Good Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal—some can be more harmful than the sunburn itself. However, there are high-quality sunscreens that offer excellent protection and are worth considering. To maximize effectiveness, lather sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to all exposed skin, ensuring even coverage. Opt for a water-resistant formula to maintain protection, even while swimming or sweating.

Note: fairer skin means more sunscrean.

6. Keep Your Eyes Protected

Just like our ears, skin, and other parts of the body, leaving our eyes exposed to harmful elements can lead to the same negative effects. Protect your eyes by wearing cool sunglasses, keeping your vision sharp while looking great.

I once wore my sunglasses in the ocean and lost them forever. Learn from my misfortune!

7. Come Prepared

Bring a first aid kit, the right tools, toys, and protection, including a life vest. Be prepared for any emergencies by learning CPR before embarking on your wonderful vacation. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local emergency services, know how to contact help, and ensure your phone is fully charged. Pack extra essentials like sunscreen, medications, and any other personal items that may be needed.

Finally, don’t forget to bring needed beach items like a shovel, bucket, football, beach ball, volleyball, towel, protective clothing, a rash guard, and gear to shield yourself from sand blasts, sun burns, and stinging jelly fish, such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a beach umbrella.

I once heard a story about someone who got sunburned and then got sandblasted, all because they weren’t properly prepared. You can avoid unnecessary pain and discomfort by taking the right precautions, or you could choose to tough it out, though that’s definitely not the healthiest choice.

For extra comfort, pack a beach mat or blanket, a portable cooler with drinks and snacks, a beach chair, and a portable speaker for music. If you enjoy water activities, bring a boogie board, snorkel gear, or a paddleboard. A beach tote or waterproof bag for storing wet clothes and valuables is also a great idea. These items will ensure you have everything you need for a fun, safe, and relaxing day at the beach.

8. Choose the Right Time to Go

Obviously, unless it’s your job, you shouldn’t go to the beach during a hurricane. To fully enjoy your beach vacation, it’s essential to choose the right time of year. However, the best season depends on your destination.

As for recommendations, the ideal time for a beach vacation varies by location:

  • Tropical destinations (e.g., the Caribbean, Hawaii): Best visited in winter or spring to avoid hurricane season.
  • Mediterranean beaches (e.g., Greece, Italy): Summer offers warm waters and vibrant coastal life.
  • Southeast Asia (e.g., Thailand, Bali): November to April is ideal, avoiding monsoon season.
  • U.S. beaches (e.g., Florida, California): Spring and early fall provide great weather with fewer crowds.

9. Don’t Dig Deep Holes in the Sand

Sadly, enough people have died or had serious accidents from digging dangerously in the sand. While digging in the sand can be a fun and enjoyable activity, it’s crucial to do so safely. Avoid creating unstable or excessively deep holes, as they can collapse and pose serious risks. When you are done digging, tightly fill the hole with sand. Always supervise children, stay aware of your surroundings, and enjoy responsibly—ensuring your exciting beach vacation remains safe and memorable.

10. Enjoy Your Time Doing Good Things

Don’t be rude, obnoxious, or foolish anywhere—but especially at the beach. Be responsible and take care of your belongings, including your trash. Avoid anything dangerously reckless; instead, make the most of your time by enjoying fun and safe activities.
